Periodontics (gum care)
Preventing and treating gum disease, before teeth start to loosen.
What it is
Gums that bleed, swell or recede are a sign of inflammation. In its early stage this is called gingivitis and is easy to treat. Left untreated, it can progress to periodontitis, which destroys the bone that holds the teeth. Periodontitis cannot be cured for good, but it can be controlled very well with treatment and regular maintenance.
How it works
- 1
Gum assessment
We measure the depth between gum and tooth and check the bone on X-rays.
- 2
Controlling inflammation
Deep cleaning above and below the gum line, under local anaesthetic if needed.
- 3
Review
A few weeks later, we check how the gums have responded.
- 4
Maintenance
Regular appointments, usually every 3 or 6 months.
Frequently asked questions
If my gums bleed, should I stop brushing?
No. Keep brushing gently and use floss or an interdental brush. Bleeding is a sign of inflammation, not of brushing too much.
Does smoking make a difference?
Yes. Tobacco increases the risk of periodontitis and worsens the response to treatment. It can also hide bleeding, which is a warning sign.
This information does not replace an appointment. Results vary from person to person and depend on the dentist's assessment.
